Assignment 5… Kind of?

Affinity

A new novel is a relationship

Whether you are introduced by a friend

Or meet by chance

(In a book store, perhaps?)

The tentative introduction…

Will you judge me only by my cover?

Are you plain-spoken? Folksy? Literate? Well-read?

The slow unfolding of first pages

When possibilities are still endless

And every word, every punctuation mark

May speak volumes

Signs and symbols grow

The theme intensifies

As your fingers hungrily devour pages

Until words blur to pure feeling

You run your hands along her spine

Breathe in her scent, uninhibited

And it is all you can do to remember

That anything else exists

Sleep becomes irrelevant

Her metaphors alone sustain you

And you long to imprint your secrets there

Within her, between the lines

To meld yourself with something more intricate

Entwine your soul with her (un)reality

Until the two are indistinguishable

And, you too, feel enchanting

In the best ones, the denouement

Is every bit as lovely as the rest

There should always be loose ends

And a lingering desire

You will keep her at your bedside

And rediscover her, again and again

Until she becomes a part of you

And you can’t imagine it any other way

I love getting lost in a book. What a wonderful ode you wrote.
